Seeing a Biofeedback Specialist

The purpose of biofeedback as a therapy is to teach individuals to become aware of their own body’s responses and to learn to control them. Acquiring skills in this area can help individuals manage stress, anxiety, and many diseases that are associated with these conditions. Therefore, learning biofeedback skills may train individuals to control a variety of conditions, often allowing the reduction or elimination of prescriptions. Biofeedback as a therapy is meant to train you for life to control you body’s responses - although sometimes a refresher course may be needed.

To begin the process of learning biofeedback, it is important to become aware of your bodily responses to stress and anxiety. For instance, if you notice your heart rate increases significantly before a presentation at work, this is an example of your body’s response to stress or anxiety. Seeing a biofeedback specialist can help teach you how to become aware and address and control physiological symptoms like these.

If you are considering seeing a biofeedback specialist, the easiest thing to do is consult the Biofeedback Certification Institution of America. This institution provides a directory to finding certified biofeedback practitioners in your area. Once you contact a biofeedback practitioner, make sure to ask them questions regarding these areas;

  1. What are their educational and training backgrounds related to biofeedback and health?
  2. Are they certified in biofeedback?
  3. Have they had experience working with your condition in particular?
  4. What would a biofeedback session with them entail?
  5. How many treatment sessions would they estimate for your particular situation?
  6. Would your treatments be covered by your insurance?

As it is with finding any other type of practitioner, it is important to find someone that you are comfortable working with. Individual biofeedback training sessions are the best because they can be tailored to your needs. However, some practitioners may offer group sessions that may offer a reduced cost and social support.
