Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine! Biking, running, barbeques and swimming are a few of the many activities that are perfect for a summer day. But the summer sun and heat can take a major toll on your health, so don’t let a heat-related illness ruin your day. Learn how you can protect yourself from the sun, prevent grilling accidents, and plan the perfect picnic so you can have a happy, healthy and safe summer.
General Summer Safety Tips:
- Water Safety - The most basic tool is learning how to swim! And remember to always swim with a buddy.
- Swim in supervised areas only.
- Obey all rules and posted signs.
- Don’t mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, and coordination; alcohol affects your swimming and diving skills; and reduces your body’s ability to stay warm.
- Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.
- Boating Safety - No matter what sort of boat you are on – row boat or ski boat, you should always follow safety guidelines.
- Be weather wise; sudden wind shifts, lightening flashes, and choppy water all can mean a storm is brewing.
- Bring extra gear you may need.
- Tell someone where you are going, who is with you, and how long you’ll be away.
- Check your boat, equipment, boat balance, engine, and fuel supply before leaving.
- Sun Safety - Summer is fun in the sun. Remember to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks when working and playing in the sun.
- Hiking and Camping Safety - Many make their way to national parks and forest to enjoy the great outdoors. The best way to guarantee a good time is to plan ahead and follow common sense safety precautions.
