Our Master's Degree Programs:
A Balance of Eastern Tradition and Western Medicine
Our accredited, master's degree programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine emphasize the unified understanding of the mind, body and spirit inherent in traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, our acupuncture college and Oriental medicine school provides you with an essential balance between learning the ancient techniques of Chinese medicine and understanding the practices of Western medicine.
The curriculum for the Master of Oriental Medicine program:
- Provides about 3,000 hours of didactic and clinical instruction;
- Includes courses in acupuncture, Chinese herbology, Western medical screening, and related studies such as Tui Na, Tai Ji, Nei Jing,
introductory Chinese language skills and practice management;
- Takes three years of full-time enrollment to complete.
The curriculum for the Master of Acupuncture program;
- Is similar to that of the Oriental medicine program, but does not include herbal studies;
- Provides more than 2,300 hours of instruction;
- Takes two and two-thirds years of full-time enrollment to complete.
Hands-on Clinical Experience: In a Wide Variety of Health Care Settings
As an MCAOM student intern, you'll provide hands-on acupuncture and Oriental medicine services to members of the public experiencing a wide variety of health conditions. You'll provide supervised care in the Edith Davis Teaching Clinic on the University campus, as well as in health care clinics and community agencies throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area. When you graduate, you'll have the education and skills necessary to develop a safe and effective practice based on your own personal style.
MCAOM admits new students in January and September of each calendar year into the masters-level school of acupuncture and college of Oriental medicine. Transfer students may be allowed to enter in the Summer trimester, which begins in May.
Certificate Program in Herbal Medicine: For Licensed Acupuncturists
MCAOM also offers an Herbal Medicine Certificate program for licensed acupuncturists who want to develop the skills necessary for the safe and effective practice of Chinese herbal medicine. New students are admitted in September and May.
History of our Acupuncture College and College of Oriental Medicine
The Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is the largest and oldest acupuncture school in the state of Minnesota offering two master's degree programs accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Founded in 1990 as the Minnesota Institute of Acupuncture and Herbal Studies, MCAOM has established itself as one of the most rigorous acupuncture schools in the U.S. and a premier Oriental medicine school.
