Become a Northwestern Alumni Mentor!
As a mentor for a Northwestern student, you have
so much to offer! You will contribute directly
to the professional developement of your future colleagues,
ease a student's transition to the workplace and share
your knowledge about your profession. In addition,
you may find yur own professional development enhanced
through sharing information, refelcting on your own experiences,
developing mutual professional networks, and perhaps learning
about the newest techniques and educational trends from
students!
What Can You Offer a Northwestern Student as an
Alumni Mentor?
- Advice on how to start a practice, market a practice
and build a solid patient base;
- Review career options and where to seek out practice
opportunities;
- Practical information about working and living in a specific
geographic location;
- Help with deciding between solo and group practice options;
- How to begin networking with practitioners and employers
in your profession;
- Share experiences of working in the "real world";
- Allow a student to job shadow you for a day so they can
see a practice in action;
- Experinece with day-to-day business practices, such as
insurance and billing;
- Discuss applications of new techniques, the latest research
findings, and trends in patient care and technology;
- Assistance with selecting a student's clinical internship
opportunities;
- How to clarify professional goals;
- Guidance and support throughout the job-seeking process,
such as help with resume preparation and preparing for
job interviews;
- Provide encouragement and support while the student is
still in school, such as discussing which courses were
most helpful or how to get the most out of their clinical
experience; and
- Just to have a working professional and friend to answer
questions!
