The Standard Process Healing Garden Additional Naming Opportunities

Thanks to a generous donation from Standard Process Inc., creation of a new courtyard garden has been realized at Northwestern Health Sciences University. Within this beautiful space, there are additional naming opportunities for University supporters to help complete the Healing Garden.

Alumni, employees, students and friends of Northwestern are invited to support the new courtyard garden located between the current building and the new Wolfe-Harris Center for Excellence on the south side of the campus.

Tumbler Pavers

Engraved tumbler pavers are the perfect choice for donors who are looking for a naming opportunity for $100 or $200 in the Standard Process Healing Garden. Made of tinted concrete, the pavers come in two sizes and provide the opportunity for the donor to have a personal message engraved in their paver. The pavers form the base of the “heart” of the Healing Garden, as they provide the bulk of the floor of the inner courtyard. The pavers encircle a grove of Quaking Aspens that are randomly placed amongst a granite and grass labyrinth, a timeless feature intended for quiet contemplation. Visitors to the Healing Garden will stand on these pavers as they enjoy the sound of water quietly bubbling down the massive sides of the four basalt columns, or smile at the sight of a hummingbird drinking the nectar from a bloom, or listen to the quiet rustle of Quaking Aspens as they wave in a light breeze.

The tumbler pavers offer donors a wonderful opportunity to recognize a loved one, congratulate a new graduate, or memorialize a parent through this affordable naming opportunity.

Stones of Distinction

Supporters of the Standard Process Healing Garden who are interested in an affordable way to leave a timeless message in this uniquely memorable gathering space should consider funding one of the distinctive stones in the Healing Garden. Three different types of stones are available in the 11,000-square-foot courtyard – dark gray granite, creamy travertine in shades of bronze and rust, and aptly-named bluestone. These stones provide the floor to the outdoor “rooms” that comprise the inner courtyard and that surround the labyrinth shaded by Quaking Aspens. They ring the outer edges of the inner courtyard, and provide the foundation for the paths that meander through the Healing Garden. And on the north edge of the courtyard, the travertine and granite stones combine to create an outdoor classroom that features a distinct floor inlaid with a stone geometric pattern and a basalt column.

The stone you choose will be inscribed with your personal message. Celebrate a loved one, congratulate a new graduate, or memorialize a parent through this affordable naming opportunity.

The Eifel Tower
Stone Benches

At the heart of any gathering place are the benches that people sit on to chat, or contemplate, or just enjoy the warming rays of a summer sun. There are more than a dozen benches planned for the Standard Process Healing Garden, each made of Virginia Slate blasted from old Taconite mines in northern Minnesota. Scattered throughout the 11,000 square feet of the Healing Garden, the benches will allow visitors to enjoy all of the elements of this unique space. Whether you want to sit beside one of the basalt columns nestled amid a pond of River Jack pebbles and listen to water quietly bubble down its massive sides, or enjoy the beauty of butterflies softly landing on a beckoning bloom, or listen to the whisper of Quaking Aspens gently rustle in a light breeze, you will find your place of contentment on a bench in the Standard Process Healing Garden.

Donors who choose to fund a bench will have a bronze plaque placed next to their bench and have the option to compose a personal message for the plaque.

The Arc de Triomphe
Sensory Gardens

Supporters of Northwestern Health Sciences University who are searching for a strikingly different naming opportunity in the Standard Process Healing Garden should actively consider funding a sensory garden. The 13 sensory gardens, each defined by large stones stacked to form distinct self-contained planting areas, surround the inner courtyard and are scattered throughout the remainder of the Healing Garden. Three sizes of the sensory garden stone planters are available, with the eight large sensory gardens ringing the inner courtyard and defining the different “rooms” featured there.

The sensory gardens will be planted with perennials that are specific to a theme: a butterfly garden, an aromatherapy garden, a spring garden, etc. The gardens are designed to be enjoyed while sitting on the edges of the large rectangular ledgestones stacked to create the sensory garden planting areas, or while sitting on a Virginia Slate bench blasted from old Taconite mines in northern Minnesota.

Each donor who funds a sensory garden will have a bronze plaque placed in their garden amidst a mix of perennial plants.

The Great Pyramid of Giza
Pergolas and Arbors

One of the first sights a visitor will see when they come upon the Standard Process Healing Garden will be the array of arbors and pergolas designed to provide shade and character to the courtyard. These unique outdoor elements – open sided and open roofed and built of cedar timbers - will provide both form and function to this unique University gathering place.

These elements of the Healing Garden are the only naming opportunity items that will be custom-made once a donor commits to funding one of the pergolas or arbors. The main shade pergola and the two shade arbors will encircle the inner courtyard, which lies at the heart of the 11,000-square-foot Healing Garden. The inner courtyard is divided into four outdoor “rooms,” each featuring a different stone treatment to provide its own identity and give a sense of a distinct space.

One of these “rooms” is intended to be covered by a large pergola designed with shade cloth that can offer significant protection from the sun as well as privacy from surrounding buildings should a class move outdoors. The pergola is flanked by two smaller shade arbors in the adjoining “rooms.” In addition, two entrance arbors will welcome visitors to the courtyard from the parking lot located on the east side of the Healing Garden.

Because of the uniqueness and significance of the arbors and pergolas within the Standard Process Healing Garden, we expect these naming opportunities to be quickly spoken for. Each donor who funds a pergola or arbor will be recognized with a personalized bronze plaque attached to the structure they fund.

The Great Pyramid of Giza
Water Features

If you are interested in supporting the most prominent feature in the Standard Process Healing Garden, then you should seriously consider funding one of the four distinct basalt columns. Water bubbles from the top of each of the two-ton columns, which each sit in the middle of their own small pond lined with native stone and filled with River Jack pebbles, small rounded boulders that accent the basalt and support the flow of water.

Like points on a compass, the four columns tower above the four sides of the 11,000-square-foot Healing Garden. Each of the four pillars represents one of the foundational elements of the University mission – education, patient care, scientific research and community involvement. In addition, the four columns represent the four academic units of the University – Northwestern College of Chiropractic, the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the School of Massage Therapy, and the School of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies.

The columns on the north, south and east sides of the Healing Garden are approximately 7 feet tall. The column sitting on the west side of the Healing Garden is larger, standing almost 9 feet tall.

An attractive bronze plaque will be placed near the basalt column you choose to fund, and will include your personal message.
