New Building Construction On Schedule, On Budget

Posted March 26, 2008

The new building addition to Northwestern’s campus is still scheduled to be open in September.

“The new building is on schedule and pretty much on budget,” said Jim McDonald, MBA, vice president of administrative services. “We’re slightly over budget because of changes we have requested.”

The budget for the new building is $6.5 million, which is being raised through the University’s ongoing “Imagine Our Future” capital campaign.

Kevin Wolpern, director of the physical plant at Northwestern, said the roof is completed and electrical and data wiring are still being installed. Workers are also continuing the sheet rock and completing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Construction on the Wolfe-Harris Center for Excellence, a 48,000-square-foot addition, began June 20, 2007. It will house the Wolfe Harris Center for Clinical Studies; the Greenawalt Library; the Integrity Management Student; Alumni and Career Services Center; and several administrative offices.

Next week, Wolpern is expecting samples for the wall colors, carpet and furniture.

Now that the major structural work is complete, Wolpern said the construction should be less of a headache for faculty and students.

“Most of the demolition for the access points into the new building is completed,” he said. “Most of the loud noise should be over.”

The University is targeting early September 2008 to begin moving into the new building. A spring move-in date originally planned for part of the new building has been altered due to City of Bloomington building construction codes.
