Construction on New Addition Nearly Complete

Posted October 14, 2008

What began about five years ago is about to come to fruition as construction of the new Wolfe-Harris Center for Excellence nears completion. The interior structure is all in place; the flooring and most of the carpet have been installed; walls are painted; and cabinets are in. “It’s all in the details now,” says Kevin Wolpern, physical plant director.

An interesting feature of the new building is the use of curved lines. The main entrance and courtyard steps are curved, a design element that is echoed throughout the space in bowed windows on the south side of the building with sweeping views of the pond; the spacious barrel-rolled ceiling in the library; and carpet design details in the library and in various hallways.

Northwestern will unveil the new building amid the fanfare of the Stars Among Us Gala, which will be held in the new Greenawalt Library on Nov. 1. The library will occupy the upper floor of the addition. "We're excited to be able to showcase the new building and the Greenawalt Library during the Gala," says Debbie Peterson, director of alumni, development and career services. "We will be using the top two floors of the building for the Gala, along with the Standard Process Healing Garden. And because we will be honoring Kent Greenawalt, who owns Foot Levelers, Inc., it is fitting that we hold the celebration in the library named after Kent and his father Monte."

The move to the new building is expected to start in mid-October. Once the building is ready, the research offices will be the first to move. The first floor will house the Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies. Following the Gala, the library will move to its new space. Moves to the middle floor will follow, with the Administration, Student Affairs, and Alumni, Development and Career Services departments all relocating to new offices.

What happens from there will be much like a domino effect. Admissions will move to the former research offices; after the library vacates their space, it will receive a minor remodel and then house the bookstore and an additional classroom; the bookstore will be remodeled into a classroom; the student lounge will make a permanent move to the cafeteria conference room; and the student lounge space will be remodeled into the Smart Center – a multi-use space that could be configured into smaller classrooms or a larger conference room. It has not yet been determined what will occupy the space where the research clinic currently is located.

“I’m happy with the progress – we’re right on track,” says Wolpern. “There have been a few glitches, but all in all it’s gone very well. It’s just about down to the doorknobs now.”

Construction of the Standard Process Healing Garden is moving right along. The project is expected to be complete in the next several weeks.
