Giving to Scholarships

Donations to scholarship funds are placed in restricted accounts; income from the account is used to fund the scholarship. This ensures long-term funding of the scholarship that you support.

The Stewards Program

The Stewards Program is designed to provide donors with the opportunity to support scholarships for students from a specific program and to support research efforts.

$500 annually for three years

Heritage Scholarships honor members of the Northwestern community and are established by individuals and families as a permanent legacy or memorial to that person.

Dr. Jeffrey Jones Scholarship

History:
On March 24, 2001, Jeffrey Jones, DC, a graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1994, passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Jones was originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and practiced in Santa Rosa, California. This scholarship in his memory was established by Dr. Jones’ classmates.

Awarding Period: Awarded at NWCC Homecoming

Scholarship requirements:

  • Applicant must be from Canada;
  • Full-time Northwestern College of Chiropractic student;
  • Current Trimester 5 to Trimester 10 student;
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0;
  • Statement of consideration: why you feel you need the award;
  • Involvement in extracurricular activity, particularly a fraternity or Northwestern sports;
  • Faculty recommendation.

Dr. Norman Horns Faculty Legacy Scholarship

History:
Created in December 2002 by the then-T6 students at Northwestern College of Chiropractic who kicked off a drive to raise $10,000 for the scholarship fund. The class named the scholarship after Norman Horns, MD, an associate professor, due to his dedication to the student body and his free, extracurricular review courses designed to help students pass their Board exams. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students at Northwestern, while at the same time, honor all the professors the students have come to love and respect.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Full-time Northwestern College of Chiropractic student;
  • Current Trimester 5 to Trimester 10 student;
  • Good academic standing;
  • Written essay on “How do DC’s interact with other health care providers to benefit patient care?” Give a unique experience you have had and explain how it has affected your ability to serve your patients and interact with other health care providers.
  • Faculty recommendation.

Dr. Vincent A. Pankratz Memorial Scholarship

History:
This endowed scholarship was established by the family and friends of Vincent A. Pankratz, DC, a 1949 graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic. Dr. Pankratz passed away on Dec. 16, 2004.

Scholarship Term: Awarded annually
Awarding Period: Awarded at NWCC Homecoming

Scholarship requirements:

  • Full-time Northwestern College of Chiropractic student;
  • Current Trimester 8 to Trimester 9 student;
  • Must be from a Midwestern state (Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota,
    Minnesota, South Dakota or Wisconsin);
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Must be legally married;
  • Exhibits an above-normal passion for chiropractic and displays a desire to restore health;
  • Exhibits personal integrity and leadership ability and will use those qualities within the profession and community;
  • Possesses a strong work ethic;
  • Has priorities of faith, family and profession;
  • Written essay providing examples of above information and traits.

Joel Demoskoff Memorial Scholarship

History:
An endowed fund established by classmates, University faculty and staff in memory of Joel Demoskoff who passed away in November 2003 from natural causes at the age of 25 while in his first trimester at Northwestern College of Chiropractic. Joel is remembered for his quiet confidence, subtle humor, gentle spirit, fierce loyalty and excellence in everything he undertook.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Applicant must be from Canada;
  • Full-time Northwestern College of Chiropractic student;
  • Current Trimester 1 to Trimester 2 student;
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Must have a strong background of athletics and church involvement;
  • Exhibits an above-normal passion for chiropractic and displays a desire to restore health;
  • Demonstrates personal integrity and leadership ability and will use these qualities within the profession and community;
  • Possesses a strong work ethic;
  • Priorities of faith, family and profession;
  • Written essay providing examples of the above information and traits;
  • Faculty recommendation.

The Robert and Joey Crotteau Memorial Scholarship

History:
Established in memory of Robert and Joey Crotteau, two of the six victims killed in the 2004 Wisconsin deer hunting tragedy. Robert and Joey are brother and nephew of Steven Crotteau, DC, a 2002 graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic. The funds for this endowed scholarship were raised during the Northwestern Higher Aim Hunt-n-Shoot. The chair for this event is Dr. Steven Crotteau.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Full-time Northwestern College of Chiropractic student;
  • Current Trimester 2 to Trimester 10 student;
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0;
  • Written essay describing how you have advanced the mission and vision of Northwestern;
  • Two (2) faculty recommendations.

Dr. Ronald R. Bubel Memorial Scholarship

History: Dr. Bubel was a well known and much loved doctor of chiropractic in South Dakota, as well as a long time supporter of Northwestern College of Chiropractic. He served in every elected position of the South Dakota Chiropractic Association and was elected to the position of Secretary-Treasurer in 1978 and served in the position until 1999. Dr. Bubel also served many years on the Board of Trustees at Northwestern. This scholarship was established by his colleagues from the state of South Dakota.

Scholarship requirements:

  • Full-time, current chiropractic student;
  • Resident of South Dakota prior to enrollment at NWHSU;
  • Academic excellence;
  • Extra-curricular service;
  • Financial need.

Healy Family Memorial Scholarships

History:
Established in 2004 in memory of Jack and Betty Healy, parents of John Healy, director of communications at Northwestern Health Sciences University since 1991 and the parents-in-law of Nancy Healy, clinic operations coordinator at Northwestern Health Sciences University since 2004. Jack Healy, PhD, was a university professor in cultural geography for more than 35 years. Betty Healy, RN, worked in public health for nearly 40 years. Both were products of single-parent households and each believed in the value of education and the importance of preventative health care. Betty passed away in 1995 and Jack passed away in 2004. The continuing generosity of donors to the scholarship fund allowed the addition of a second scholarship in 2007.

Alice Elizabeth Healy Memorial Scholarship requirements:

  • Full-time Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine student;
  • Current Trimester 2 to Trimester 10 student;
  • Student must be a single parent;
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Service/leadership involvement;
  • Financial need;
  • Faculty recommendation.
