Service Learning
Service learning engages students in activities that combine community
service and academic instruction. Course content focuses on civic
responsibility, reflective thinking, and critical engagement with
a community organization that meets local, national, or international
needs. Students can participate in the following faculty-designed
programs or design their own experience.
- Interns can participate in a four-week clinical
opportunity in Costa Rica. Supervised by chiropractic faculty,
students educate, evaluate, and provide treatment to patients.
- Chiropractic interns can accompany riders on the
Heartland AIDS Ride. They evaluate patients and apply appropriate
soft-tissue techniques and other modalities.
- Interns can complete service learning hours regarding
domestic violence at the Harriet Tubman Center and the Lewis House.
- Hours can also be gained at the Aliveness Project,
a Twin Cities center for persons with AIDS.

Northwestern Faculty and Students Provide Chiropractic Care in Costa Rica
Thomas Davis, MUP, DC, associate professor for the chiropractic program at
Northwestern, recently returned from another unusual visit to Costa Rica. Over the course
of two weeks, Dr. Davis, along with four trimester nine and 10 students and one other
doctor of chiropractic from Minnesota, volunteered countless hours of their time to help
underprivileged Costa Ricans. [ more ]
