Service Dogs:
The University's Department of Clinical Education provides a training site on campus for Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota. Over the last several years, the department has hosted six hearing and service dogs, helping them learn how to assist Minnesotans who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or disabled to become more independent and self-confident. The dogs are carefully selected, often from local animal shelters, and trained during a period that lasts four months for Hearing Dogs and six months or more for Service Dogs. According to Lynne Hvidsten, D.C., associate dean of clinical education, the University's support is an outgrowth of Northwestern's mission statement, which strongly encourages community involvement.
