Where
did you do your internship, and what about that practice interested
you the most? I did my internship with Dr. Josh Watkins at Watkins Family Chiropractic in Prior Lake, MN. I was attracted to his clinic because he has a great family practice that sees all types of patients from newborn to 90 years old. He is also a great teacher and mentor who allows his interns to get involved and hands on with the patients. You don’t spend a lot of time sitting around or watching at his clinic. The clinic is a very busy place and as an intern there you are always working on something or treating patients. You are never bored at WFC!
What did
you learn from this experience that you will take into your future
practice? I learned so much about managing a clinic and staff while working there. At the school clinics I was never exposed to that side of the clinic. Even when the doors are closed there is always something to do when you own a business. Chiropractic is a very demanding profession. I got to see Dr. Watkins manage a great clinic, staff, bills, insurance, an intern as well as be a husband and father of two!
In what
ways have you gone above and beyond your educational training? While at the clinic I was able to take part in public health talks in the community. The experience of talking to a bunch of strangers about chiropractic is absolutely priceless as an intern.Outside of the clinic I am always traveling to seminars and learning everything I can about delivering lifetime family chiropractic care. I was also the president of the On Purpose Club on campus.
Why is it
important for you to be involved in your profession? It is important to get involved because we ARE the profession. If we don't define what it is that chiropractors do, then someone else will define it for us. As a T10, I see that in 3 months, I am the doctor, I will have all the responsibility that my community entrusts in me with their health….I'd better be prepared.
