Massage Therapy

Northwestern Health Sciences University School of Massage Therapy operates a Teaching Clinic in Burnsville and on campus. Interns provide massage therapy services under the supervision of a School of Massage Therapy faculty member and participate in the Teaching Clinic as part of their educational program. Interns will take a brief health history relevant to massage therapy and will provide a full body relaxation-oriented massage in Clinic Rotation 1 and 2. Clinic Rotation 3 and 4 are able to give a more clinically focused trigger point based massage.

Clinic Rotation 1: Students begin providing full body massage therapy services in the University's Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic, under the supervision of a faculty member. Clinic Rotation 1 is an opportunity for students to become comfortable interacting with the population of individuals seeking full body relaxation. Learning plans in Clinic Rotation 1 focus on the application of full body techniques, as presented in Relaxation Massage 1 and 2. Students are also required to keep and maintain a journal.

Clinic Rotation 2: Students continue providing full body massage therapy services in the University's clinic system, under the supervision of a University clinician. Learning plans in Clinic Rotation 2 focus on the application of refined skills in full body relaxation while introducing new skills they are learning in Rehabilitative Massage 1. A clinic journal is required as a continuation of Clinic Rotation 1.

Clinic Rotation 3: Students begin to focus on the application of advanced techniques of the upper body in the University's Massage Teaching Clinic, under the supervision of a faculty member. Techniques include trigger point therapy and cross fiber friction as presented in Rehabilitative Massage 2. Students create a self care plan for themselves.

Clinic Rotation 4: Students focus on practicing and refining the advanced techniques of trigger point therapy and cross fiber friction as presented in Rehabilitative Massage 1 & 2, under the supervision of a Massage Therapy Teaching Clinic faculty member. Students implement the self care plan they created for themselves.
