I love what I do. My work gives me the opportunity to help the world be a better place. Every day I get to assist students in learning how to help people lead healthier lives. I have the chance to influence students as they define who they will be as clinicians and I see students transform into clinicians. I bring a well-balanced blend of real-world clinical experience and academic scholarship to my role as the lead administrator for Northwestern’s clinical training programs in chiropractic. I had my own private practice in Minneapolis, MN, for 5 years and was the clinic director for Northwestern’s public clinic in Minneapolis for an additional 3 years. During my 25 years as a doctor of chiropractic, I have expanded my skills as a clinician, teacher, administrator and academic scholar.
My philosophy of teaching is to provide hands-on opportunities for each student until they become technically proficient and interpersonally competent while coordinating all aspects of patient care with ease and confidence. My goal for every student upon graduation from Northwestern is that they are patient-centered, ethically sound and financially viable in the ever-evolving healthcare environment.
I teach this by administering the clinical and experiential education programs in every trimester of a chiropractic student’s education at Northwestern. These programs include Clinical Internships 1-10, Case Studies 1 and 2, the Community Based Internship Program (CBI), the Preceptorship Program (CPAP), the Clinical Rotations Program and the Postgraduate Preceptorship Program. I oversee the placement of interns in appropriate clinical settings and the management of relevant quantitative data as required for graduation. I am responsible for identifying and developing quality clinical field training sites that meet the educational needs of the students and standards for quality established by the University.
The continued pursuit of scholarly activities, service and lifelong learning are important to me. During the past decade, I have presented educational research at international conferences and co-authored journal articles on chiropractic intern education. I enjoy attending professional conferences to stay current with developments in clinical education. In 2008, I earned a master of business administration. I am active in numerous professional associations and serve on several Northwestern committees. Most recently, I received an award as Humanitarian of the Year for community service.
