Excellence in University Patient Care: Dr. Amy Horton, Chiropractic

Dr. Horton has demonstrated clinical excellence since she began her clinical practice at the Bloomington Clinic in 2001. She maintains a very professional relationship with her patients and students alike. She calls her patients to check on their status if warranted by their condition. She routinely involves the acupuncturist and massage therapist in patient care and also has good rapport with medical doctors and imaging centers. As a mentor for the T8& 9 interns, Dr. Horton's skill to recognize the need of each intern has benefited the students tremendously. For the past five years she has worked with students who need extra attention. She represents the clinic on curriculum management and is well respected by her colleagues.

Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Linda Bowers, Chiropractic

Over the past 25 years Dr. Bowers has taught numerous classes, always with enthusiasm and dedication. She works extremely hard to make sure that NWHSU graduates are well-prepared for practice. She is detail-oriented, up-to-date, well-read, subtly funny, and in her own words, “freakishly strong.” She integrates both old and new teaching techniques and learning tools in her classes. Dr. Bowers gets to know her students well and goes out of her way to help and guide them, especially those who are having difficulties.

In addition to being an excellent teacher, Dr. Bowers has been on various test committees of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and was editor of a chiropractic journal. At Northwestern, she has served as president of the Faculty Senate, and as acting Dean for a period of time. She has served on countless committees, many of them as chair, including her current position as the chair of the IRB committee.

Excellence in Research, Scholarship or Creative Activities: Beth Burgan, Massage Therapy

Beth Burgan has practiced massage therapy full time for almost 20 years. Beth has been involved in numerous scholarly and creative activities since joining Northwestern. Most recently, through a unique collaborative effort with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing, Beth was invited to be the lead author of a Taking Charge of Your Health massage therapy website. This is part of a larger website aimed at providing credible information regarding CAM therapies to the public. Beth researched and wrote a large part of the content for the website and coordinated the efforts of several individuals to create interesting clinical scenarios and appropriate video clips. The result is a state-of-the-art website that will bring massage therapy to the health care consumer and put Northwestern on the map as THE leader in the field of massage therapy.
