2003 Faculty Excellence Award Winners

Excellence in Teaching: Beth Burgan, Massage Therapy

Beth received her MFA from Kent State and is a graduate from Northern Lights School of Massage. She is a nationally certified massage therapist and has had her own successful professional practice for many years. She teaches several courses at Northwestern as a solo instructor and in a collaborative format with other massage instructors.

She has developed her courses by spending a great deal of time to ensure that the content it relevant and understandable to her students. One size does not fir all. She gets to know her studetns and designs and paces the material to meet her learning objectives and the students' learning styles. She goes beyond the facts to include the real life issues that commonly present to practicing massage therapists. She is an inspiration to her students in many ways and does all her work with a down-to-earth and positive matter-of-fact attitude.

Excellence in Teaching: John Pirog, MCAOM

John has studied in both the United States and China to refine his knowledge and techniques in traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). His thorough background and presentations in class include sound theroy, relevant information and humor. He is greatly interested in his students, their personal experiences in class, and the educational process in general. He is completely dedicated to his teaching and makes time available for students' questions. He researches educational models and practice and spends time clearly above and beyond the call of duty. He wants MCAOM. our university and its students to be the best.

Clinical Excellence: Wei Liu, MCAOM

Dr. Wei Liu earned his medical degree in TCM in China and is an Associate Professor in the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Dr. Liu has developed positive and beneficial relationships with his patients and student interns. He takes the time needed to provide the best combination of therapies to get the best results for the patients. He also explains in detail his clinical rationale to his interns. He is a role model for caring and kindness while working with his patients, provides a pleasant and positive learning atmosphere, and is open to answer his patient and student questions.

Clinical Excellence: Huan Ma, MCAOM

Dr. Huan Ma received his TCM degree in China and also had the opportunity to study with his grandfather from a very young age. He is an Associate porfessor in the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and has recently been named to be the Associate Dean of clinical services for MCAOM. Dr. Ma has been described as a "master" in all the work that he does with his patients and students in clinic. He creates a positive healing environment with his caring attitude and demonstration of experience and skills. He not only makes excellent clinical decisions, but also applies his techniques with ease and style. He seeks feedback from his interns and gives them challenging work and insights.

Clinical Excellence: Dr. Zach Zachman, Chiropractic

Dr. Zachman has been teaching at NWHSU since 1987 when he started his residency in orthopedics. He is currently an Associate Professor and Senior Staff Clinician. For the past eight years, he has divided his time between clinic and classroom, giving students the benefits of current clinical perspectives grounded in strong educational content. He has been greatly involved in provider credentialing and insurance issues as a representative for the University complimentary care elective and at the Augsburg College Physician's Assistant program. With hi work behind the scenes as well as in front of patients and students, he is seen as a role model for compassionate and dedicated care.

Excellence in Research, Scholarship or Creative Activities: Dr. Yongping Jiang, MCAOM

Dr. Jiang received his doctorate in TCM in 1995. He is an Associate professor, clinical faculty and chair of the Herbal Medicine department for the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He has written several articles in The Journal of Chinese Medicine in the last five years and three papers for publication in Acupuncture Today since January of this year. He was the recipient of an award for his work on "The acupuncture treatment of peripheral neuropathy in HIV/AIDS" at the 4th Shanghai International Symposium on clinical acupuncture in China in November, 2002 and has authored two books in Chinese.
