Diversity

MISSION

The mission of the Commission on Diversity is to facilitate the development of a culturally competent University.

To achieve this mission, the commission will:

Implement in close cooperation with appropriate University offices and departments, activities and programs to improve the environment for increasing ethnic and cultural diversity across the University.

VISION

The Diversity Commission partners with the larger University community to create an environment which fosters understanding and an appreciation for diverse opinions and ideas. We initiate and champion University wide efforts that prepare students and employees to effectively respond to the needs of diverse populations. We uphold values of ethical decision making, global awareness, community service and civic responsibility. We strive to create a culturally diverse environment for the benefits that diversity brings to the Northwestern community, and provide programs and support services that address the needs of a diverse campus.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

We will develop academic programs that train our students to respond to the needs of diverse populations.

We will strive to create a learning environment that is culturally diverse and in which cultural differences are valued.

We will recognize human dignity, difference and equality that includes but is not limited to race, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, or ethnicity.

We will solicit and be open to diverse points of view, and will not avoid or shun dissent.

We will provide programs and support services that cater to the needs of a diverse campus.

We will encourage and promote service to a diverse community.

OUTCOMES

We will be the University of choice for all communities.

We will establish best practices in culturally competent health care.

We will have employees who are proud to be a part of the University community.

We will be responsible and welcoming neighbors.

We will be responsible stewards of all of our resources.
