Challenge 1: Developing a Shared and Inclusive Understanding
of Diversity
Diversity means different things to different
people. To foster understanding and an appreciation of diverse
values, opinions, ideas and people, the definition of diversity
must be inclusive. Diversity as defined for NWHSU is that ‘ we
acknowledge human dignity, difference and equality that includes
but is not limited to race, ethnicity, age, class, gender, sexuality,
disabilities, religion and spirituality.’ In addition, we
recognize the value of the diversity in our health care programs.
The senior cabinet and board of trustees has clearly stated a commitment
to diversity - ‘NWHSU is committed to cultural competency,
(awareness, knowledge and skills) and integrating diversity into
all aspects of the University’s strategic direction.’
Communicating this understanding of diversity will make it possible
to develop coherent goals related to meeting the identified Challenges.
Targeted Areas for Improvement Include:
Communicate the mission, vision and challenges to all constituents
by means of the communicator, the diversity web page and signs and
posters around campus.
