Challenge 3: Service to a Diverse Community
NWHSU has a heart for community service. The efforts to date of
the community service committee and our ‘community of caring’ demonstrate
a spirit of service, which will be useful as we begin to develop
and nurture service learning opportunities in the community. Our
health care programs remain underutilized in many communities, including,
GLBT, Aids, Disability and communities of color. This is somewhat
of a dichotomy, given the vast amount of research indicating the
benefits of the health care practices taught at NWHSU. A primary
goal of this objective will be to create bridges between our campus
community and the communities we serve. We will utilize our clinical
and educational services to improve access and address health disparities
for individuals and communities in need.
Targeted areas for improvement Include:
- Seek, develop and nurture service learning opportunities in
the community
- In a need based area, develop and maintain community clinical
services that offer a variety of health care options
- Develop core curricula service learning opportunities
- More aggressively recruit research participants from communities
of color
- Provide opportunities for students to include diverse experiences
in their clinical rotations which will ultimately enhance their
skills as providers.
