Click here for THIS MONTH archive Juneteenth began as an African American celebration to commemorate the ending of slavery in the USA. The celebration involved festivities, and story telling as elders recounted that important day on June 19th 1865 when union soldiers arrived in Galveston Texas (two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation) to announce that the war had ended, and slaves were now free. The celebration was also a time for families to come together for prayer, encouragement. Today, Juneteenth is a worldwide celebration of remembrance of the importance of freedom, education and achievement. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing that is now celebrated by all races.
