The Frequently Asked Questions section of this site is intended to answer many popular questions about the Financial Aid process. In addition to this list, we encourage you to visit other portions of this site for more information.

Q: Is financial aid available?
A: For those who qualify, there are federal, state, private and institutional resources.

Q: How do I get financial aid?
A: Upon being accepted by Admissions and paying a tuition deposit, a financial aid packet, (including online FAFSA information) is mailed out to the student along with "time lines" to assist you in planning.

Q: What is Northwestern Health Sciences University's (NWHSU) federal code?
A: When completing the FAFSA, section 6, #012328.

Q: How much can I apply for?
A: For the student only, your budget consists of tuition and fees, books and supplies, personal and transportation for a "standard 8 month period" (approximately $27,300 when not living with parents; living expenses is about $1,500 per month). Note: Tuition and fees varies per program and are subject to increases each year.

Q: What if I have Special Circumstances (reduced income, etc.)?
A: Northwestern has forms that may be completed that address those areas creating economic hardship and upon further review the possibility of getting need based aid (see the federal student guide).

Q: Can I get more financial aid beyond the "standard"?
A: Yes, we can review (supplemental documentation required) the following areas: day care, medical/dental not covered by insurance, unusual/non-routine/emergency car repairs, required elective courses, and purchasing a computer.

Q: Do I have to make loan payments while in school?
A: No, need based aid (Perkins and subsidized Stafford loans) are automatically deferred while you are in school and maintaining enrollment eligibility criteria (see catalog). You may choose to pay unsubsidized interest while in school (see MPN).

Q: Are there suggestions or hints for quick and accurate processing?
A: Please read carefully and complete all forms in ink (especially FAFSA). Print clearly and sign all areas indicated. Your taxes (if applicable) should be completed before sending in FAFSA. If you are not sure, call us at (800) 888-4777. We would be happy to help .

Q: What kind of loan debt can I expect when I graduate?
A: The average debt of the recent graduation (chiropractic) class was $125,000 (over a 10 year period at 8.25 percent, the monthly payment is around $2,000). Needless to say, please borrow only what you absolutely need. Live as a student now…not as a student later!

Q: Are there deadlines?
A: Generally, as long as we have all documentation in place 30 days before the term starts your aid will arrive in time for the first day of classes. For your convenience, the Admissions Office mails a "time line" flyer to new students.
