Should We Be Carbo-Phobic?

Are you one of the millions of Americans who turned to the latest diet fad—a low-carb diet—as a “quick fix” to lose weight?

Is a low-carb diet the healthiest way to eat and lose weight?  According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), it is not.  ACE recommends a balance between eating sensible portions of a wide variety of foods and regular exercise for optimal health benefits, including weight loss.

A Healthy Diet Includes Eating:

  • A wide variety of healthy complex carbs such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains;
  • Moderate amounts of low-fat meats, fish, and dairy products; and
  • Sparingly sweets, refined grains, and fats.

The American Institute for Cancer Research cites a number of research studies that confirm that a diet rich in sensible portions of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans are a major ingredient in any weight-loss strategy.

Weight-loss doesn’t happen overnight.  Set a realistic goal for yourself—one pound a week.  Then eat healthy, sensible portions and get regular physical activity.  You will be surprised by what you accomplish.
