Stars Used to Rate Foods?!?

Hannaford Bros. Supermarkets is using this system to simplify choices for consumers – Hannaford Guiding Stars. This first ever storewide nutrition navigation system designates gold-star shelf tags to the healthiest foods. Healthy products get 1 star, better choices get 2, and the best are given 3. Foods that have no nutritional value get no stars. Guiding stars mean the product has more vitamins, minerals, fiber and whole grains and less saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars.  For instance: Shredded wheat gets 3 stars; baked beans are awarded 1 star; and Doritos receive no stars. Of the 27,000 evaluated food items in the store, only a quarter of them received at least one star.

This year the Food Marketing Institute survey reported that 72% of supermarkets were offering some type of nutritional guidance. This is an increase from the 67% in 2004.
