Organic Farms in Minnesota
There is an abundance of organic and grass-fed farms located throughout Minnesota. You can visit most of these farms to pick up a variety of products - and some farms offer local delivery:
- Avalon British Whites (Glyndon, Minn.): One of the few, if not only, sources of grass-finished British White beef in North America.
- Buffalo Gal/Money Creek Buffalo Ranch (Houston, Minn.): One of the finest quality bison herds in America – located in the Mississippi River Valley. Buffalo are raised on a diet of grasses and sun-cured hay without fat-boosting hormones, antibiotics or supplements. Visit the ranch or have products shipped directly to you.
- Cedar Summit Farm (New Prague, Minn.): This dairy farm has adopted a grazing system where all animals are pastured on the land for at least seven months and fed stored grasses the remainder of the year. No antibiotics or added hormones are used. Choose from beef, pork, chicken, turkey, and a variety of dairy products. Visit the farm or find products at many of the Twin Cities Natural Food Co-ops.
- Downing Family Farm (Braham, Minn.): Located in east central Minnesota, this farm produces 100 percent grass-fed beef. Animals are raised (and finished) on a diet of lush pasture in the summer and high-quality hay in the winter.
- Earthwize Natural Meats (Carlton, Minn.): Animals are fed a natural diet that includes foods such as kelp meal to strengthen their health rather than rely on antibiotics and other medications. Beef is available year-round; pork and chicken is seasonal. All meat is frozen and processed at plants meeting USDA standards.
- Farm On Wheels (Kenyon, Minn.; various locations): Animals are raised on green pasture without the use of corn or soy in their diets. This farm offers chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, pork, duck, goose, goat, lard, butter and eggs. Although the farm is located in Kenyon, products are available at the Just Food store (Northfield, Minn.), the Black Dog restaurant (St. Paul, Minn.), and farmers’ markets in St. Paul, Burnsville, Minneapolis, Prior Lake, and Northfield.
- Green Pastures Dairy (Carlton, Minn.): Open spring through fall, Green Pastures offers 100 percent grass-fed, all natural, raw milk and cheese. No herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers are ever used on any of the pastures and no hormones or antibiotics are used on the herd. This dairy also offers 100 percent grass-fed ground beef and pasture-and-whey-fed pork.
- Hill and Vale Farms (Wykoff, Minn.): Offers Angus X beef, lamb and free-range chicken. Animals feed on grass/legume rotational pastures without meat by-products, antibiotics and hormones. Meat is fresh-frozen and can be delivered to homes, stores, restaurants and farmers’ markets.
- Hilltop Pastures Family Farm (Fountain, Minn.): Offers “Beyond Organic” chicken, turkey, eggs, beef and pork. Beef is completely grass finished. Products can be picked up on the farm or found at farmers’ markets in Lanesboro and Chatfield.
