How to Stop Snoring Naturally

Approximately 45% of normal adults snore at least occasionally. Twenty-five percent do so habitually, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Snoring is more common in men and in overweight people. Luckily, there are lifestyle changes that can help you to stop snoring.

  • Change your sleep position. Snoring occurs when the soft palate, uvula, tongue, tonsils, and/or muscles in the back of the throat rub against each other and create a vibrating sound. You can either sleep on your side or try raising the head of your bed 4 inches. Place blocks or wedges under the head of the mattress.
  • Lose 10% of your body weight to help stop snoring. Overweight people have bulky neck tissue which increase snoring risk.
  • Avoid alcohol and sedatives. Anything that causes sedation (sleeping pills or low dose alcohol) can cause snoring, because they suppress your breathing drive.
  • Inhale steam before bed. Nasal congestion can cause snoring.
  • Try nasal strips to stop snoring.
