Shed Your Winter Weight
After a long winter in hibernation, many people experience a sense of spring fever when the weather starts to warm up. But for some, that spring fever also serves as a reminder of how out of shape they’ve become over the winter. “During winter the weather is cold, sidewalks and roads are icy, and a large portion of the day it is dark outside,” says Ryne DeVries, DC, assistant professor at Northwestern. “That’s not the best recipe for staying active.” A winter spent indoors can lead to weight gain, lethargy, loss of muscle tone, and loss of strength, according to Dr. DeVries. To reverse those effects, try some of these fun ideas to get back in shape this spring:
It is important to remember to take precautions when you begin working out after a long hiatus. “Muscles, tendons, and ligaments have been hibernating too,” says Dr. DeVries. “They have to re-awaken slowly.” Make sure to gradually increase the intensity and duration of your exercise routine, and to listen to your body as you work out. “Once you start your workout routine you will feel more energetic, less stressed out, and may experience some weight loss,” says Dr. DeVries. “You’ll have fun enjoying the outdoors and being active in the community. |
