Acupunture Treatment for a Better Sleep

Sleep is essential when it comes to the natural health and everyday function of our well being. However, according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep deprivation. The long-term effects of sleep loss and sleep disorders have been associated with a variety of health issues including an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, and stroke.

Though sleep deprivation is a common and recurring problem, Mark McKenzie, LAc, MaOm, dean of the acupuncture program at Northwestern Health Sciences University, recommends traditional Chinese medicine to treat sleeping issues. “Using acupuncture on specific points in the back of the neck will help improve the quality of one’s sleep,” he says. He adds that these acupuncture points have been identified as improving the quality of sleep and in effect, a healthier body. McKenzie also suggests acupressure, which is done by applying mild pressure on the acupuncture points and lightly pinching the point between the thumb and the finger.

In addition, McKenzie says, “Having trouble sleeping is usually the symptom of an underlying disharmony. These may include, but are not limited to, the types of food consumed, eating too late, physical conditions of the individual, and the sleeping environment.”

Other strategies McKenzie suggests to help get a better sleep:

  • Eating an early dinner
  • Limiting intake of food before going to bed
  • Eating no later than 7 p.m.
  • Taking traditional herbs as recommended by an herbalist
  • Eliminating electronic devices near the bed
