Spotlight on Wellness

Kate Anderson, NCTMB, associate clinic faculty

What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is being aware of what it means to take care of one’s self emotionally and physically by eating well and exercising.

What do you do to stay well?
I like to be outside doing activities like hiking and biking. I also eat well and like to cook.

How do you work wellness into your day?
It is a natural part of my day. I like to bike to work, walk my dog, and cook dinner. Wellness is not something I have to do, but something I want to do.

What are your biggest struggles for maintaining wellness?
A busy schedule is my biggest struggle. It’s hard to be active while working full-time and taking a full load of classes. When I find myself feeling tired, I know I need to schedule physical activity back in my day.

How do you find time to workout?
If I have a free half hour, I usually go for a walk or a swim or to the gym.

Why is being well important to you?
It’s important for me to be well because of what I do. I want to set a good example as an educator and for what I will do in the future.

Do you have any recommended resources for wellness?
I think Northwestern is full of resources for wellness. We have nutritionists, Oriental medicine practitioners, chiropractors who know a lot about nutrition and exercise, and massage therapists who have a wealth of knowledge of steps that people can take and places to go for additional information. The University’s library is also a good resource.
