Spotlight on Wellness

Christine Kelly, MA, Admissions Counselor

What does wellness mean to you?
To me, wellness means making healthy choices about one’s lifestyle. Wellness also means living a life that gives you joy and happiness, and living a life of balance physically, mentally, and spiritually.

What do you do to stay well?
I try to make sure I get enough rest, as well as make sure I am physically active and workout often. I do a lot of yoga and also try to balance my life with quiet, meditative time.

How do you work wellness into your day?
Wellness is something I have to work into my day, like brushing my teeth – I make a habit of it. I do yoga in the morning, and eat breakfast before I leave for work.

What are your biggest struggles for maintaining wellness?
The biggest struggle for me is eating enough vegetables and getting proper nutrition.

How do you find time to workout?
I always have found time to workout, ever since I was a kid. My dad was a coach, so it’s always been ingrained in me. He’s 63 years old and we ran a half-marathon together just this past summer – my dad is definitely my idol when it comes to fitness and wellness.

Why is being well important to you?
I want to live to be 106! But really, I just think that wellness is a part of my life that I can be proactive with and control. It helps me sleep at night knowing that I’m being proactive about my health and wellness.

Do you have any recommended resources for wellness?
HealthyU(sm) is a great on-campus resource. I also belong to a great running club called Active Life and Running Club.
