FDA Approves a New AIDS Pill - Atripla

AIDS can be treated by taking the first 3-in-1 antiretroviral pill, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. An Indian generic drug company made this pill for patients in the countries helped by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. The White House’s global AIDS coordinator commented on how this pill called Atripla should greatly help, simplify, and improve treatment of AIDS patients in poor countries. At this time it is not reported how much money it will save, but it should facilitate better therapies and adherence.

Under the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the United States is the largest provider of antiretroviral drugs in the world, which pays for treatment of 561,000 patients in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
