![]() Lutein and Fish Oil Can Slow Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
A new study being completed by the National Eye Institute in the United States will evaluate how a combination of antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin along with fish oil can further slow the progression of vision loss from Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss for people over of the age of 50 in both Canada and the United States. The study is a follow up from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and will be called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2). Results from AREDS demonstrated that high-dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals, taken orally, reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25 percent, and the risk of moderate vision loss by 19 percent.
