![]() Whole Grains and Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is a major cause of teeth loss and a leading dental health problem. Preventing this common problem requires good dental care that includes brushing, flossing, and regular professional teeth cleaning. New research tracking dietary practices on nearly 34,000 men over several years also shows that eating whole-grain breads and cereals helps keep the gums in better health and helps prevent periodontal or gum disease. The men who ate the most whole grains (top 20% of intake) in the study were 27% less likely to develop gum disease than those with the lowest intake of whole grains (bottom 20%). The protective effect of eating whole grains was found after adjusting for several factors, including age, BMI, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake. What it Means: To maintain healthy teeth and gums throughout your lifetime, consider adding more whole grains to your diet each day. Source: Merchant AT, et al. (June, 2006).
