Ice Skating Safety

What a fun winter activity! But at times it can lead to harm. Here are a few suggestions to keep you safe on the ice:

  • Always wear a helmet, especially when playing hockey.
  • If playing hockey, wear protective knee and elbow pads, mouth guards, and shin guards.
  • Only skate on ice that has been approved by local authorities. Only skate on public lakes or rinks that are safe for skating.
  • Learn how to protect yourself in case the ice breaks. If you fall through the water, stretch your arms out to your sides, kick, and try to crawl back onto the ice while shouting for help.
