Top 20 Cosmetic Companies of Concern

The following is the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) listing on their “Skin Deep” database of the companies using ingredients for personal care products with the highest average levels of concern for certain health risks including cancers, birth defects, and hormonal dysfunction. “Skin Deep” currently contains information on 7,093 unique personal care product ingredients, as found on the ingredient labels of 14,841 products.

In the database, companies, brands, products, and ingredients are ranked from 0 (lowest concern) to 5 (highest concern) in relation to the toxicity of their ingredients. The EWG constructed a product database structure that is comprised of eight major product categories — skin care, makeup, hair care, nails, eye care, feminine hygiene, dental and oral hygiene, and fragrances.  The companies listed below had overall rankings ranging from 4.3 to 3.5. The rankings below are in parentheses, listed highest to lowest:
