Benefits
The following is a brief overview of the benefits available
to Northwestern Health Sciences University employees
and is intended only as a general summary. These benefits
are available to full-time employees and employees who
are in a budgeted position of 20 hours or more per week.
More detailed information is provided by the Plan document
and employee handbook. Please contact the Human
Resources Department with any questions you
might have.
Life Insurance
Employees are covered by a basic life insurance plan
the first of the month following one (1) month of employment.
This plan provides a benefit of $5,000 at no cost to
the employee.
After one (1) year of employment, benefit eligible
employees are eligible for a life insurance plan that
provides a benefit of two (2) times annual salary. The
cost of this coverage is paid by Northwestern Health
Sciences University.
Medical Insurance
Employees are eligible for medical coverage the first
of the month following one (1) month of employment.
Coverage for dependents is also available.
Dental Insurance
Employees are eligible for dental coverage the first
of the month following one (1) month of employment.
Coverage for dependents is also available.
Short-Term Disability
Employees are eligible for short term disability leave
immediately upon hire. Northwestern Health Sciences
University pays 100 percent of your monthly wage for
the first month of disability, 90 percent during the
second month of disability, and 80 percent during the
third month of disability.
Long-Term Disability Insurance
This benefit will pay 60 percent of your monthly wage
if you are unable to work for more than ninety (90)
days due to injury or illness. Northwestern Health Sciences
University pays the entire cost of this coverage which
becomes effective the first of the month following one
(1) year of employment.
Employee Assistance Program
The EAP provides problem assessment and referral for
a broad rage of problems or concerns including: emotional/behavioral,
family and marital, financial, legal, child care, elder
care, substance abuse and work-related issues.
Retirement Plan
All employees working at least 1,000 hours per year
are eligible for employer contributions to the Northwestern
Health Sciences University retirement plan after one
(1) year of employment. Northwestern Health Sciences
University contributes a percentage of the employee's
annual salary to the funding vehicle of the employee's
choice.
Employees may also contribute on a voluntary plan on
a pre-tax basis up to the maximum allowed by law. These
supplemental contributions may begin immediately upon
hire. Employees are fully vested in the retirement plan
when they begin participation.
Flexible Spending Accounts
This plan allows employees to pay eligible insurance
premiums, health care expenses, and dependent care expenses
on a pre-tax basis. New employees are eligible to participate
in pre-tax insurance premiums the first of the month
following one (1) month of employment. Employees are
eligible to participate in health and dependant care
accounts on a calendar year basis. Enrollment for these
plans takes place during annual enrollment.
Holidays
The University is closed for the following holidays:
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents'
Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus
Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas
Eve Day and Christmas Day. A holiday which falls on
Saturday is generally observed by the University on
the preceding Friday and a holiday which falls on Sunday
is generally observed the following Monday.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
All full-time employees and part-time employees working
20+ hours/week* accumulate PTO based on length of services
with Northwestern Health Sciences University . Accumulated
PTO is to be used for time off due to illness or vacation.

* Part-time employees accumulate a pro-rated amount
of PTO based on their normal work week.
Additional Benefits
Northwestern Health Sciences University offers other
benefits to its employees at a minimal cost. Included
are legal services, long term care insurance, auto and
homeowner's insurance and other voluntary insurance
programs. The University also offers discounts to a
variety of local companies through MERSC.
