NWHSU provides paid time off to all regular full time and regular part time employees (budgeted for 20 or more hours a week) for eleven (11) fixed holidays each calendar year. These holidays are:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • *President's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • *Columbus Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • *Day after Thanksgiving
  • *Christmas Eve Day
  • Christmas Day

*Non-faculty clinic employees required to work on a designated holiday will receive a floating holiday in return to plan and use at their discretion. Floating holidays must be used within ninety (90) days of the holiday.

Employees will not be required to work on holidays except where continuous operation of service is essential (clinics).

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, it will generally be observed on the preceding Friday. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, it will generally be observed on the following Monday. Employees will be notified in advance of the day for a particular holiday's observance.

Employees are eligible for holiday pay immediately upon their date of hire. In addition, they must be actively at work the day before and after the holiday (unless they have pre-approved Paid Time Off) in order to receive holiday pay.

Regular full-time employees will be paid eight (8) hours holiday pay based on their regular rate of pay at the time of the holiday. Eligible regular part time employees will be paid the equivalent of their normal work hours if a holiday falls on a regularly scheduled workday. Part time and temporary employees are not eligible for holiday pay. Likewise, employees on an unpaid leave of absence are not paid for holidays that occur during the leave.

Holiday hours count as hours worked for overtime purposes.
