Short Term Disability

Summary and plan information

Northwestern provides benefit-eligible employees a short term disability program to provide financial security in the event an illness or injury occurs which is not covered by workers' compensation or other disability funds. The benefit pays a varied percentage of the employee's current base earnings up to a maximum amount. These amounts are not reduced by the amount of any Social Security and/or Workers Compensation benefits received.

There is a five (5) calendar day waiting period for short term disability. If Paid Time Off (PTO)  is available it must be used during the waiting period. If the disability is due to childbirth, use of PTO is not mandatory.

During the period of a disability absence, the employee must be under the regular care and attendance of a licensed healthcare practitioner. The employee may be required to furnish the University a statement from the healthcare provider from time to time.
