Human Subjects Protection Education

Northwestern Health Sciences University requires Human Subjects Protection education for all investigators and research personnel involved in research with human subjects regardless of the source of funding.

All researchers and staff listed on new exempt, biomedical and social IRB applications are required to complete basic human subject’s protection training offered through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Researchers and staff listed on new IRB applications must have successfully completed either the basic or refresher course within the last three years.

Health and Biological/Medical applications

Researchers and staff listed on Health and Biological/Medical applications are required to complete:

  • The CITI Biomedical Research Investigators training course, OR
  • The CITI Biomedical Refresher - if the initial course was completed more than three years from the application date

Social and Behavioral Sciences applications

Researchers and staff listed on Social and Behavioral Sciences applications are required to complete:

  • The CITI Behavioral or Humanist Research Investigators training course, OR
  • The CITI Social-Behavioral-Educational Refresher - if the initial course was completed more than three years from the application date

New exempt applications

Researchers and staff listed on new exempt applications may choose either:

  • The CITI Biomedical Research Investigators training course, OR
  • The CITI Behavioral or Humanist Research Investigators training course
