Students from Northwestern Health Sciences University Advocate for Chiropractic Role in the Health Care System in Washington
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. –A group of 23 Northwestern Health Sciences University students recently fought for the advancement and preservation of the chiropractic profession at the National Chiropractic Legislative Conference (NCLC) in Washington D.C. This is an annual event and opportunity for students and doctors to lobby for justice and health care equality for doctors of chiropractic and their patients. The NCLC took place Feb. 25 – 28, 2009.
Students and doctors who attended the conference had the opportunity to meet with legislators and members of Congress to discuss topics affecting the chiropractic profession. According to Michael Compton and Adam Favro, two Northwestern chiropractic students who attended the NCLC this year, the main issue addressed at the NCLC was having chiropractic included in national health care reform with physician status. Other issues included mandating chiropractors in all Veterans Affairs facilities; advocating for having commissioned officers in the armed services as doctors of chiropractic; the extension of the Tricare military health care coverage to include chiropractic benefits; and full scope inclusion of chiropractic under Medicare and Medicaid.
Northwestern Health Sciences University offers a wide array of choices in natural health care education including chiropractic, Oriental medicine, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and human biology. The University has nearly 900 students on a 25-acre campus in Bloomington, Minnesota.
