Northwestern Health Sciences University’s Summer Science Academy Turns Students’ College Dreams Into Reality
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Attending college was just a dream four years ago for 15 students who attended a fourth and final year of the Summer Science Academy at Northwestern Health Sciences University. Today, all of those students are college-bound.
“The Science Academy was a great guide for me and helped me to accomplish a lot,” said Adbuhrahmen Hassen, a senior at Arlington High School in St. Paul, Minn. “I would like to go into the medical or dental field. I attended a health career seminar at the University so I could start focusing on which specific career I want to go into.” Hassen has attended the Summer Science Academy since the eighth grade.
The Academy, held on the campus of Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, runs for one week each August. This year, 108 students attended the program, which is funded with the help of the Carolyn Foundation, the General Mills Foundation, and private donations and grants from the Northwestern community. Northwestern offers the program free of charge to the students.
“I’m proud of what the kids have accomplished and the work they have done,” said Bill Kuehl, BA, director of admissions of Northwestern Health Sciences University, and co-chair of the Summer Science Academy. “I am really proud that we are graduating our first class and that they are pursuing college. I think the Academy has been a very influential experience for the kids.”
Northwestern Health Sciences University offers a wide array of choices in natural health care education including chiropractic, Oriental medicine, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and human biology. The University has nearly 1,000 students on a 25-acre campus in Bloomington, Minnesota.
