Commencement Marks a First for College of Undergraduate Health Sciences

Kate Martin | April 15, 2014

The first stand alone B.S. degrees will be awarded.

When Northwestern Health Sciences University students walk across the stage at commencement this weekend, they will earn a place in Northwestern history. For the first time, the College of Undergraduate Health Sciences will present diplomas to students earning a Bachelor of Science degree independent of another degree/certificate at Northwestern. Six of the nine students earning a BS degree were specifically pursuing a bachelor's degree at Northwestern.

Northwestern will honor 28 students at a commencement ceremony for the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, the College of Undergraduate Health Sciences and the School of Massage Therapy. The ceremony will be held Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in the Northwestern auditorium. A reception in the cafeteria will follow.

Thirteen students will receive a Master of Acupuncture degree; one student will receive a Master of Oriental Medicine degree; nine students will receive a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology degree; four students will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree; and one student will receive a Certificate of Professional Massage Therapist.

Student speakers are Karen Keranen, from the School of Massage Therapy graduating class, and Rebecca Lloyd, from the College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine graduating class. The commencement address will be delivered by Deborah Ringdahl, DNP, RN, CNM, Clinical Assistant Professor and Co-Director, Integrative Health and Healing DNP Program, University of Minnesota School of Nursing.
