It’s that time of year again; summer is coming to an end, and classes are almost in session. Northwestern will once again host the annual Washburn Family Picnic. On Thursday, Sept. 2 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Northwestern employees will dish out burgers, hotdogs and other picnic dishes to about 800 teachers, students and parents of Washburn Elementary School for its back-to-school event. »MORE

In an effort to increase employee participation, camaraderie and communication, six Northwestern employees joined forces to restructure the Employee Council. “The first step was to look at what works, what doesn’t work and what we can improve,” said Vanessa Feils, administrative assistant for Alumni, Development and Career Services, and the incoming president of the Employee Council. “It was a collaborative process that involved new and old members of Employee Council. After studying abroad in Ecuador, transitioning back to life in America proved to be a challenge for Kristin Swartz, BA, a project manager in the Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies at Northwestern. However, Swartz found solace by training in the ancient Chinese practice of Qigong. A group from the Northwestern campus community lost a combined 640 pounds over the past year through the Weight Watchers at Work program. The program, brought to campus by the Mind, Body, and Spirit Advisory Board, was offered to all Northwestern’s students, staff and faculty, with a reduced rate given to faculty and staff through the health and wellness budget. »MORE

The most interesting item by far that we hold in the archives is an absolutely amazing machine, named the “Electronic Reactions of Abrams” (ERA), after its inventor, Albert Abrams, MD. Mark Zeigler, DC, president, and Michael Wiles, DC, MEd, provost and vice president of academic affairs, visited La Clinica at the end of May 2010. For the past 10 years, Northwestern has been part of a student intern program with La Clinica in which Northwestern students spend three weeks traveling to selected communities in Costa Rica, providing free chiropractic care and other health care. »MORE

Last summer, Lindsay Andres found herself talking with fellow chiropractic students about sports they participated in during high school. “A few of us girls talked about how much we loved soccer in high school and how much we missed playing,” said Andres. The Newest Member of the President’s Circle
Linda Hanson, DC, is the newest member of the President’s Circle, a group of people dedicated to financially supporting Northwestern Health Sciences University on an annual basis. Dr. Hanson recently graduated from Northwestern in November 2009, and served as the Student Senate president in 2008-09. She is currently working in the research department as a research fellow. “This is one way I'm able to give back to an institution that continues to provide so much,” said Dr. Hanson. “I'm simply grateful for the many opportunities I've been blessed with at Northwestern.”

A special tradition emerged from this event – when the ducklings hatched, Northwestern employees herded the family of ducks down to the pond behind the building. It was the cold that Mika Turner caught while on a graduate study trip to China that first sparked her interest in acupuncture and Oriental medicine. A friend of hers recommended that she try the “weird Chinese massage” that Turner later learned was called Tui Na, to abate her cold symptoms. Lucky for Turner, she received more from the experience than a remedy; she found her calling. »MORE
A full-time mom with three children found herself working odd jobs after graduating from high school. “I was very interested in massage therapy during high school and had been talking about going to massage therapy school for years,” said Laura Johnson, a massage therapy student at Northwestern Health Sciences University.
