On-Campus Blood Drive Makes Giving Easy

Posted on Nov. 2, 2009

Did you know that one pint of blood can save up to three lives? Donating that one pint of blood only takes 30-45 minutes. Would you give less than one hour of your time to help save a life? To make it easier for the Northwestern Health Sciences University community to give the gift of life, the Student Senate Volunteer Committee is hosting a Blood Drive on campus Nov. 3, 2009 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in the gym.

“Northwestern and its students have a history of giving back to our community,” says Miaken Zeigler, chiropractic student and Volunteer Committee Chair, who is coordinating the blood drive. “We volunteer at local schools, sporting events & clinics, humane societies, and more. The blood drive is another opportunity for students to get involved in making a difference in people's lives.”

Donations from Northwestern’s blood drive will go to Memorial Blood Centers, which serves more than 30 hospitals in the Twin Cities area, northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. According to Memorial Blood Centers, someone needs blood every two seconds, and shortages of all blood types occurduring the winter holidays. If only one more percent of all Americans would give blood, blood shortages would disappear for the foreseeable future, they assert.

Zeigler says they hope to reach a goal of 50 donated units of blood. You can schedule an  appointment time via e-mail to Miaken Zeigler, or walk-ins are welcome on the day of the drive.
