Partnership with Center for Diagnostic Imaging Helps Create State-of-the-Art Radiology Laboratory

Posted on Oct. 21, 2009

Northwestern Health Sciences University proudly unveiled state-of-the-art imaging technology at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly-completed Center for Diagnostic Imaging Radiology Lab on Oct. 19, 2009. The new classroom is the result of a generous $150,000 contribution by the Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI).

In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Mark Zeigler, DC, Northwestern’s president, praised the efforts of CDI, saying, “Without their partnership, none of this would be possible. We are grateful for our relationship with CDI, and for their dedication and commitment to our institution.” In addition to the donation dedicated to the radiology lab, CDI has previously contributed more than $300,000 to the University.

“CDI is grateful for the opportunity to help bring this advanced technology to teaching and learning,” said Ken Heithoff, MD, CDI founder and chairman. Dr. Heithoff, a member of Northwestern’s Board of Trustees, was on campus recently for a Board meeting. “Seeing this room full of students,” he recalled, “was better than a ribbon-cutting."

Dr. Zeigler also recognized Robert Baumgartner, CEO, Center for Diagnostic Imaging, acknowledging the shared vision of CDI and Northwestern. “Any support we give is well invested,” echoed Rick Long, CDI Regional Vice President and Business Development for Minnesota. “We really value our relationship with Northwestern.”

The CDI Radiology Lab, located in Room 202, features 28 workstations that allow students to view and manipulate digital X-rays. Leading-edge, SMART™ board technology allows faculty to engage students with an interactive discussion of images.

A far cry from the X-ray view boxes of the past, students will now be able to view images individually on their own computer monitor, electronically interacting either one-on-one with the professor, or with the class as a whole.

“The students are excited,” stated Renee DeVries, DC, DACBR, associate professor at Northwestern, and director of Radiology Consulting Services. “We couldn’t be more thrilled. The entire experience with CDI in establishing the radiology lab has been positive.”
