Northwestern Students Will Go for the Gold at Annual Chiro Games

Posted on Oct. 28, 2009

The Chiro Games will take place Nov. 7-8, 2009 in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and include 12 different sporting events such as co-ed beach volleyball, men’s golf, and women’s soccer. Nine chiropractic schools are scheduled to participate. Perennial champions Parker College of Chiropractic and Palmer College of Chiropractic will be among them.

More than 100 students from Northwestern Health Sciences University are planning on competing in Chiro Games. This is the largest number of participants that the University has ever sent.

For the first time, the Student Senate organized volleyball and basketball tournaments designed to hone the skills of the Florida-bound students. The chair of the Student Senate Athletic Committee, Dana Schomberg, a chiropractic student, says she hopes these extra practices will increase Northwestern’s chances of bringing home a trophy. “Last year, the volleyball team took second at the Chiro Games,” said Schomberg. “We’re hoping for them to take first this year. They definitely have a talented squad!”

The annual Chiro Games will also include ice hockey as an event this year. Hockey has not been played during the games since 2004. Northwestern will send 17 team members from the Naturals, the University’s American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) team, to compete against two other chiropractic schools, including Parker College of Chiropractic, one of Northwestern’s biggest rivals and last year’s Chiro Games’ Champion.

John Healy, club advisor and the University’s director of communications, does not seem the least bit worried. “Of all the teams, the Naturals are the only ones playing in the ACHA. They’ve been well coached for the last five months in twice-a-week practices, they have a system, and they’re outstanding athletes. I think we can win.”

One of the Naturals’ captains, Giles Stifter, also maintains a positive attitude. “I think if we go down there and have fun, we should have some success,” says Stifter. “My hopes are to win all three games and win the gold medal.”
