Diversity Club Presents Documentary of Chinese Poet

Posted on Oct. 29, 2009

"Cold Mountain is a rollicking, tasty film filled with poetry, colorful characters, Zen wisdom and witty commentary,” says Deb Wallwork, co-director of the documentary “Cold Mountain: A Chinese Poet.” The Diversity Club at Northwestern Health Sciences University will present a free screening of the documentary Nov. 4, 2009, at 5:30 p.m. in L3.

According to Tania Orandi, chiropractic student and Diversity Club president, the film is sure to engage people interested in poetry, China, Zen Buddhism, Taoism and other spiritual pursuits.

Winner of the Best of Fest at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival, “Cold Mountain” is a half-hour film portrait of the Tang Dynasty Chinese poet Han Shan, a.k.a. Cold Mountain. Recorded on location in China, America and Japan, the filmmakers describe the poet's life and read his poems.

As filmmakers Wallwork and co-director Mike Hazard explain, “Han Shan wrote poems for everyone, not just the educated elite. A man free of spiritual doctrine, it is unclear whether or not he was a monk, whether he was a Buddhist or a Taoist, or both. It is not even certain he ever lived, but the poems do.”
