University Recognized for Green Commuting Efforts

Posted on Nov. 18, 2009

Northwestern Health Sciences University was nominated for a Commuter Choice Award from MetroTransit, in recognition of efforts to educate students and staff about environmentally-friendly commuting options.

“It is a great honor to be nominated,” said Emily Tweed, PhD, associate vice president and dean of students, “and largely due to the work of the Student Senate Green Committee.”

The Green Committee introduced and promoted the Go To College Pass, which offers discounted rates for public transportation, and organized other events on campus to promote green transportation options.

“What’s fun about this committee,” said Mika Turner, chair of the Green Committee, “is helping people see that it’s easy to make simple changes that are environmentally-friendly. That is a reward in itself for our committee.”

The University was one of 28 organizations that was in the running for five awards, which were presented at a ceremony Nov. 17, 2009. Awards went to Abbott Northwestern Hospital; Minneapolis Community and Technical College; the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy; Lake Region Medical manufacturing; and the Sibley Bike Depot. Awards were also presented to two individuals.

The Commuter Choice Awards are presented each year to organizations or individuals who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to promoting alternatives to driving alone, thereby helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
