First Diversity Fest Was a Success
Posted on July 27, 2009
A performance by the Mu Gung Hwa Korean Dance Academy started off the evening at the first annual Diversity Fest at Northwestern Health Sciences University on July 23, 2009. It was a colorful event, filled with authentic costumes and performances; a smorgasbord of ethnic foods; and vendors peddling gift items from around the world. Nearly 200 students, staff, faculty and their families attended the event.
The Diversity Club organized the event in an effort to celebrate diversity within the University, said Tania Orandi, president of the diversity club. “I believe that everyone had tremendous fun. I want to thank all the students who worked very hard to make the Diversity Fest happen,” said Orandi. “I would like to thank Dr. Oyelowo for her support and wisdom. For most of the vendors and the performers, it was their first visit to our campus. They mentioned that it was their first time to learn about chiropractic or acupuncture. I believe part of community education on health is to reach out to a diverse community both on-campus and off-campus.”
According to Tolu Oyelowo, DC, diversity commission chair, the diversity slogan at Northwestern is ‘Celebrate Me, Celebrate You, Celebrate Us’. “It was wonderful to see students from all academic programs coming together to showcase talent, collaboration and service, and demonstrate that diversity is about inclusion,” Dr. Oyelowo said. “My congratulations to Tania and the diversity club leadership team for a fabulous job.”
In addition to the Korean dance performance, the evening included belly dancing, a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, a traditional Indian dance, free henna tattoos and complimentary chair massages.
