Annual Luncheon Honors Work of University Faculty Members
Posted on June 24, 2009
The seventh annual Faculty Honors Luncheon will honor Northwestern Health Sciences University faculty for Excellence in Teaching, excellence in patient care, and excellence in research, scholarship, or creative activities. The event will take place on June 25, 2009, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Cafeteria Conference Room. Each award recipient will receive $500.
University faculty, deans, and the provost are invited to attend the luncheon. Mark Zeigler, DC, president, will open the event with a welcome to attendees. Noni Threinen, DC, EdD, associate vice president of Institutional Effectiveness, will then recognize previous winners, following with the presentation of awards by the CTL Advisory committee members.
The award recipients are nominated by their peers, who send nominations to Dr. Threinen. They are then presented to the CTL Advisory committee and selections are made based on criteria. “It’s a tough choice; there are usually many qualified individuals,” says Dr. Threinen. Global ranking is used for a tie breaker in case of a tie.
Initially Dr. Threinen thought that giving faculty the opportunity to nominate each other for various awards would allow them to become aware of what their colleagues are doing in terms of curriculum, and improve interactions among them. “The Faculty Honors Luncheon is a way to honor and appreciate the work of all University faculty; not just award recipients,” adds Dr. Threinen.
Renee DeVries, DC, DACBR, associate professor, received the Excellence in Teaching Award last year. “I felt very honored to receive the award last year as there were many deserving recipients,” she says. “It was especially meaningful to be nominated and chosen by my peers for the honor.”
