Volunteer at the ‘Back In Shape Run’ and Give Back to the Community
Posted on April 8, 2008

It’s time to gear up and give back by volunteering on June 7, 2008, for the Center for Diagnostic Imaging Back In Shape 5K Run and the Patrick Holmes Memorial 5K Walk hosted by Northwestern Health Sciences University.
Volunteers are needed on race day to help with registration, water stations, timing, food preparation, and may other duties. Volunteer coordinators Christine Quam, admissions counselor at Northwestern Health Sciences University, and Lynn Heieie, associate director of Admissions at Northwestern, have been managing volunteers at the run for the past few years. Heieie has been volunteering at the Back In Shape Run for a total of 10 years.
“I love being outside, surrounded by runners and walkersof all levels and feeling the energy of it all. Everyone just seems to be in a good mood,” Heieie said.
Heieie says she volunteers because it just feels good to help if she can, and she likes contributing something back to the community.
Volunteers at the run receive free race registration for a two hour time donation, a free t-shirt, entrance in a $50 gift card drawing, and free lunch. Students are eligible to receive work study or volunteer hours.
Race day kicks off with the CDI Back In Shape 5K Run beginning at 8 a.m., followed by the Patrick Holmes Memorial 5K Walk at 9 a.m. The race begins and ends on the campus of Northwestern Health Sciences University located on the corner of Penn Avenue and 84th Street in Bloomington, Minn. Cost for the run or walk is $20 prior to June 5 and $25 race day. In addition to the run and walk, there will be a ¼ mile kids’ run and a ½ mile kids’ run, both beginning at 10:15 a.m. Kids’ run registration is $7 prior to June 5 and $10 race day; all children who participate will take home a ribbon. Families are encouraged to participate together; they may be eligible for a special $40 family rate. Prizes will be given to the top finishers in each age category and all first-time runners will receive a medal.
Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up in the Foyer of Northwestern Health Sciences University or should contact Sarah Erickson, co-race director, at (952) 888-4777 ext. 129, or serickson@nwhealth.edu. For more information on race day activities visit http://www.nwhealth.edu/backinshape/.
