Northwestern Health Sciences University Reaches Out To Make a Difference
A
Celebration of Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Posted on Oct. 22, 2009

Northwestern Health Sciences University will participate in Make a Difference Day by raking leaves in the yards of neighboring senior citizen homeowners in need of help who live in Bloomington. Students, faculty, staff and their families are encouraged to volunteer to lend a helping hand on Nov. 7, 2009.

A hearty breakfast will start the day at 8:30 a.m. in the Northwestern cafeteria. Then volunteers, divided into groups of five to10, are sent out to rake up to two homeowners’ yards.

Group leaders are needed to organize a small group of five to10 volunteers. Leaders will be in charge of recruiting, making carpool arrangements, contacting the homeowners, and getting extra rakes for the group. If you are interested please contact Ryan Chapman, community relations coordinator, at rchapman@nwhealth.edu.

Make a Difference Day has been a Northwestern tradition for many years. “It is a good opportunity for the students to work with faculty, staff and other students,” said Chapman. “I know that the senior citizens just love it. Hopefully, we will be able to set up a similar project in the spring.”

Last year, Northwestern had a record breaking 75 Make a Difference Day volunteers including children, spouses and partners. Together, they were able to rake 14 Bloomington yards.

Make a Difference Day is a national event that was created by USA WEEKEND magazine and intended to gather people around the country to help others. In 2008 about 3 million people accomplished thousands of projects in hundreds of towns.
